Annual Information Statement (AIS)

an-yoo-uhl in-fer-may-shun stayt-ment

The Annual Information Statement (AIS) is a detailed financial report issued by the Income Tax Department of India. It shows a taxpayer’s income, investments, and major financial transactions for a financial year.

It includes details like salary, interest income, dividends, stock and mutual fund transactions, property deals, and foreign remittances. AIS is more detailed than Form 26AS and helps taxpayers review, verify, and even give feedback on the data before filing their tax returns.

A taxpayer reviews her Annual Information Statement (AIS) on the income tax portal before filing her return to make sure all her financial details are correctly recorded.

The AIS shows her salary income, interest from fixed deposits, dividends, mutual fund transactions, and tax deducted at source (TDS). For example, it reflects ₹9,60,000 as salary income, ₹12,000 as interest income, and ₹25,000 as dividend income.

If she finds any mismatch—such as missing TDS or incorrect amounts—she can submit feedback on the portal to get it corrected. This helps ensure accurate tax filing and reduces the chances of notices or errors later.

2021 – AIS introduced to expand the scope beyond Form 26AS, covering items like capital gains, savings interest, foreign remittances, and specified financial transactions (SFTs)

2022 – Feedback mechanism enabled, allowing taxpayers to accept, reject, or correct transaction data and improve accuracy before filing returns

2023 – AIS API integration with fintech platforms and tax tools, enabling automatic data import into ITR systemsfor a faster and more user-friendly filing process
