Awesome Oscillator
aw-sum aw-suh-lay-ter
The Awesome Oscillator (AO) is a momentum indicator developed by Bill Williams that measures the strength of a trend by comparing short-term momentum with long-term momentum.
It is calculated as the difference between:
• 5-period Simple Moving Average (SMA)
• 34-period Simple Moving Average (SMA)
both based on the midpoint of each candle (High + Low) / 2.
The indicator is shown as a histogram around a zero line:
• Bars above zero → bullish momentum
• Bars below zero → bearish momentum
Traders use the Awesome Oscillator to:
• Identify shifts in momentum
• Confirm trends
• Spot early signs of reversals
Common signals include:
• Increasing green bars → strengthening upward momentum
• Decreasing green bars → weakening upward momentum
• Red bars below zero → strong downward momentum
• Zero-line crossover → possible change in trend direction
In November 2023, HDFC Bank’s stock showed how the Awesome Oscillator can signal momentum changes. At the start of the month, the stock was trading around ₹1,525, with the oscillator showing green bars above the zero line, indicating bullish momentum.
As the days passed, the green bars became smaller, suggesting that the upward momentum was slowing. Around November 13, the oscillator crossed below the zero line and turned red. Soon after, the stock price fell sharply to around ₹1,470 by November 17.
This early signal helped traders anticipate the weakness before the actual price decline became obvious. Later in the month, the oscillator turned green again as the stock recovered toward ₹1,510, indicating a possible shift back to upward momentum.
• 1995 – Introduced by Bill Williams
The Awesome Oscillator was introduced in the book , where Williams explained market behavior using psychology and chaos theory.
• Adoption in Technical Analysis
It became popular among traders as a simple visual tool to track momentum without relying on complex calculations.
• Present Use
Today, the Awesome Oscillator is widely available on charting platforms and is commonly used for momentum analysis, trend confirmation, and identifying potential reversals.
